Brake Pads

Your brake pads are an important element of your braking system and they are a part that you should pay attention to. Brake pads compress to create friction on your brake rotors and this friction makes your car stop.Brake pads work really hard, really often. .
The force they have to exert to stop a moving vehicle is enormous and gives off a lot of heat which wears down the brake pads.

Worn brake pads means ineffective braking which is dangerous on the roads. And so regular testing and inspection of the condition of your brake pads is important.

Are there signs a brake pad replacement is due?

Brakes that squeal are a warning that your brake pads are worn down; many pads have a small metal piece embedded in them that scrapes on the disc when your brake pads are getting worn, causing that high pitch noise. However, it's not advised to wait until you hear noises to get your pads assessed, we recommend having your brakes inspected at every service.

It is important to remember that brake noises are not just caused by normal wear and any unusual noises anywhere in your car should always be investigated by a qualified professional mechanic.

At Drysdale Motors we offer a free 65 Point Safety Check with every car service. As part of our Safety Check we inspect the brake pads for wear and advise you if they call for replacing. We can also advise the right pad for your driving conditions.

How often should my Brake pads be replaced?

Brake Pads can live anywhere between 15,000 to 70,000 km's. This can differ due to a number of factors such as; driving style, local conditions, towing heavy loads. If your brake pads are wearing out prematurely your mechanic might advise using a heavier duty or heat resistant brake pad more suited to your vehicle.
